I’m very happy and thankful to have you checking out this podcast I started. Before I get into what makes the podcast so special and unique, let me tell you about myself…
I’m a podcaster, writer, director, and performer based out of Austin. I live here with my amazingly funny and uber talented wife Maryann.
Originally from Connecticut, I moved to New York after college because I wanted to go on a life adventure. All I knew was that New York would be fun and New York is where some of the best comedy in the world exists.
During my 10 years there, I spent thousands of dollars and hours learning and watching some of the great (and not as great) work at UCB, The Magnet, and The PIT. I also learned and worked with the amazing children’s theater company The Story Pirates. And to make ends meet, I spent my days counting books at The Drama Book Shop and nights slinging drinks at Gotham Comedy Club. Basically, I got to watch (and do) a lot of live theater during my time in New York. Whether I was acting, writing, directing, coaching, teaching, or simply watching… comedy was at the center of it all.
Always a firm believer of characters the universally language of comedy, I decided to start a podcast center around fun talks about characters. But what angle did I want to take? What could I do to make this podcast unique from all others? How could I make it fun and informative for the comedy nerd or dreamer?
I realized the greatest character machine in American Comedy history is that magical studio in Rockefeller Center- Saturday Night Live!
The podcast is called SATURDAY NIGHT CHARACTERS WITH MATT ALSPAUGH. Each episode, I have on a guest I met somewhere along my comedy journey between New York, LA, and Austin.
The cool twist? What really makes the podcast unique? The guest decides which SNL character their episode will revolve around.
Join me and the amazingly brilliant and talented guests I have on as we use the SNL character as a doorway to all things comedy!
